$5000 for every child?

Hillary says that she wants to give every child born in the United States $5000 from the government. That is a nice way to buy votes from the poor. But it is not a very good policy for a capitalistic society. Why would she only stop at $5000? Why wouldn't she give everyone 10,000? And why does it only go to new born children? Why can't she give the money to living adults?

The bottom line is that this is a bad idea because it depends on raising taxes to give to others. It also may encourage irresponsible parents to have children just so that they can get another $5000 from the government. Isn't it enough that our government acts as a safety-net for people who need assistance? That safety-net many times is abused, and many times it causes more problems than it solves.

If Hillary wants to give her own money to anyone else, that would be fine. But her proposal to give everyone else's money to who she decides is dangerous. While it will likely give her votes, it is not good policy. Read this article about it and decide for yourself if you think it is a good idea.

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that downpayment on their first home," she said.
